He began studying pottery at the University of Kentucky in \u003cspan\u003e1971\u003c\/span\u003e and was a research student at Kyoto University of Fine Arts in Kyoto, Japan from \u003cspan\u003e1974\u003c\/span\u003e to \u003cspan\u003e1977\u003c\/span\u003e, where he studied under the late Kazuo Yagi. He returned to the US in \u003cspan\u003e1978\u003c\/span\u003e. He has received two Fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, one in \u003cspan\u003e1978\u003c\/span\u003e, the second in \u003cspan\u003e1990\u003c\/span\u003e.
